An Encouraging Word From Pastor Bill!

Rays of Light

I love sharing with you the the unique ways God reveals life lessons to me. If you’ve been reading Encouraging Words for a little while, you know I find God speaking and revealing His love and lessons for life all the time. Today, I read a beautiful analogy I just have to share with you! It’s from the book Holiness Revealed by Amy Reardon. It’s based on Hebrews 1:3, “The Son is the light of God’s glory and the imprint of God’s being.

Hebrews 1:1-4

“In the past, God spoke through the prophets to our ancestors in many times and many ways. In these final days, though he spoke to us through a Son. God made his Son the heir of everything and created the world through him. The Son is the light of God’s glory and the imprint of God’s being. He maintains everything with his powerful message.

Dig Out

By your words I can see where I’m going;
they throw a beam of light on my dark path.
I’ve committed myself and I’ll never turn back
from living by your righteous order.
-Psalm 119:105 (The Message)

Just came back in from cleaning snow off the sidewalks around the house in order to get to my neighbor’s car the plow truck so graciously buried.

Hymn #222

Kim, the girls and I had the opportunity to visit a church of a different tradition than my daughters were accustomed to. They weren’t sure what to expect especially since they had to wear dresses at that church. After we arrived, they discovered that the building wasn’t that different from our church and that the people weren’t that different either but they didn’t quite understand why we were shuffled onto old wooden benches in the middle of the meeting space.

Putting it away?

Mrs. Pastor Bill put away all the Christmas deco last night. Something about that exercise makes me a little sad but, as she reminds me every January without fail, “If we leave the decorations up all year, they won’t be special anymore.” Have I ever told you how wise my Kimy is?

Bright, Shiny & New!

How many of you remember the first car you owned? Not the first car you were allowed to drive, but the first car you paid for. Mine was a shiny bright Red 1988 Yugo! Kimy and I bought that car brand new, in 1989, for less than $4000! It was glorious in all of its point 9 liter engine’s power, manual four speed transmission and premium sound system that ejected a cassette tape every time you hit a bump in the road!

What makes the “right” gift?

There’s only two more weekends until Christmas! There will most certainly be a lot of shopping for just the right gift for just the right person to be given at just the right time. So what makes a gift the right gift? Well, different people have different ways of evaluating the rightness of a gift. Some people believe that the more financially valuable the gift is, the closer it moves to the category of being right. Others believe that the gift is right if it meets the particular need of the recipient. Think about that for minute…

Take a breath BEFORE hitting send!

Several months ago, as most of you might remember, I had to have my knee repaired after blowing it out during the closing song of a worship service. Since the surgery was on my leg and it was hard to get around, I spent a lot of time in my recliner and not being able to interact with a lot of people I had to communicate with email, Facebook and text messages. On one of the early days of recovery, I received a text message from someone that simply stated “I hate you”.

Church Music Pt. 4!

The final in a devotional series on music in the church. Next up: The Bible!

Many times in my pastoral career, I have been asked what makes a good church. So, I have said that a good church is made of only two things: good, solid Biblical preaching that encourages or challenges the Believer and authentic worship to God through music. We’ve already discussed the importance of preaching, so today we will break down why music is so i
mportant to God.

Church Music Pt. 3!

I have often been asked what to look for in a good church. To me, the answer comes down to two simple issues: preaching and music. Depending on the day, my feeling as to which is more important waivers. Yes, depending on your stage of life, children and youth ministries could play a factor in choosing a good church, but even then, if dad and mom aren’t being fed, then a whizzbang kid’s ministry or a hip-happening teen ministry won‘t sustain the parents religious life once their kids have aged out.
