Obeying is hard!

I remember being at my parent’s house a number of years ago when my daughters were very young. I told them to pick up the toys since it was time to go home and that’s when the floodgates opened! There was major wailing and crying and gnashing of teeth and that’s when my dad said, “Aren’t you gonna do something about this?!”
I said, “Why? What else should I do?” He said, “Are you going to let them keep carrying on like that?” and I said, “Look at them, they’re actually doing what I asked, I never said they had to like it.” Don’t miss the point, even though they complained the whole time, they did what I commanded. Even though my daughters were not thrilled with the work I asked them to do, I was thrilled with their obedience. Now follow me on this… A father experiences something very special when his children obey him. It points to the love and respect his children have for him. Now look at what Jesus said in John chapter 15, “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.” Did you catch that? Jesus is saying that by obeying His commands, by obeying His Word we prove we our for Him and respect His authority in our lives. And not only does that bring joy to our Heavenly Father it also miraculously, supernaturally brings joy to us! And not just any joy, total, complete joy! There truly is nothing more satisfying for a Christian than knowing beyond a shadow of doubt that we are bringing joy to the heart of our Heavenly Father simply by obeying His Son! So complain if you have to, but expect to have a full on change of attitude once you give in and obey and see if your joy doesn’t reach even greater heights than you ever could have dreamed!
