Hinge Pin

Some of you might know that I’m sort of handy around the house. OK, that’s not entirely true… I know just enough about household maintenance to keep things together, but not enough to renovate a whole house. I remember when my dad and I were doing some much needed updating on an older home Kimy and I lived in several years ago. We needed to install a number of new doors throughout the house. In order to set the doors correctly, we placed each door on its hinges and then shut it to assure that it lined up properly with the knob and latch assembly to fit into the strike plate that keeps the door shut. As we finally finished the last door, dad was on one side and I was on the other to test our work. I lightly wrapped on my side of the door which let dad know to push the door open from his side. He turned the knob and pushed the door that promptly fell off its hinges, falling into the room and cracking me square in the middle of my forehead! That’s when we realized that we had forgotten to install the hinge pins on that particular door. Apparently, hinge pins are the single most indispensable part of every door. It doesn’t matter how perfectly aligned the door is with the strike plate or how perfectly it’s fitted onto its hinges, without the hinge pins, the door simply falls apart. This reminds me of the Resurrection. You see, the Resurrection of Jesus is the hinge pin to Christianity. Then and even now, the Resurrection is the single most indispensable part of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It doesn’t matter how perfectly aligned our lives are with all of the moral teachings of the Bible and it doesn’t matter how well we fit in with the church, without the Resurrection our faith simply falls apart. Look at what the Apostle Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15:18, If Christ is not risen from the dead…”Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost.” If Jesus is dead, then we are all lost and without hope. Now take a look at verses 21&22, “For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.” If Jesus is raised from the dead, then humanity’s story has been changed! As death came through Adam, so now life comes through Jesus. So today, reflect on the fact that you are a resurrected person! You have eternal life! You have nothing to fear and that includes not fearing even death!
