Indy and the Last Crusade!

There’s a scene in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade that speaks to me on a very deep level. The Nazis have kidnapped Indy and his father because they think the two of them will lead them to the discovery of the Holy Grail, the chalice that Jesus drank from at the Last Supper. Indy indeed does lead them to the hidden sanctuary but has to pass through a gauntlet of contraptions that could easily end his life if he takes one wrong step.At first, he refuses until one of the Nazis shoots his dad. Indy then decides to do what the bad guys demand. Its a classic Hollywood trope, but Indy makes it through, springing all the deadly traps which now allows the Nazis to follow. The second intriguing aspect of this adventure is what they do with the Grail itself. Legend has it that the Grail has magical properties, that if you drink from it you will be healed and possibly live forever. It is this possibility that motivates Indy to make the walk into the chamber in the first place. He truly believes that if he can find the actual cup that Jesus drank from he will save his father. Once in the secret room, one of the Nazis grabs the fanciest, most beautiful cup from among dozens of cups on display. He chose poorly and dies a horrible death. Indy, on the other hand, thinks through the legend and remembers that Jesus was a poor man and would have used an ordinary vessel at every meal. He then picks up the plainest, non-ornate cup, fills it from the fountain of Holy Water present in the chamber and pours it on his dad’s wounds. And everyone lives happily ever after! Now let me ask you something… What is the motivation of your life when it comes the people you love? Are you motivated to provide for them? Are you motivated to receive from then? Are you motivated to see them come to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ? Are you motivated to sacrifice everything for the people you care about? The Apostle John says in 1 John 3:16, “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.” Today, when your kids give you static or your spouse doesn’t agree with you or your boss asks you to do something you don’t want to do, remember that your actions and response could just possibly safe someone’s life!
